The Botswana Gambling Authority has granted ten new bookmaker licenses in a strategic move to expand and better regulate the country's gambling sector. Of the ten licensees, six are already operational, one has withdrawn, and the remaining three are preparing to launch soon.
The licensing initiative is already making a tangible economic impact. Over 400 jobs have been created through casinos and the newly licensed bookmakers. Projections suggest that up to 2,300 additional roles could be generated in the coming years across casinos, betting outlets, and Limited Payout Machines (LPMs), contributing meaningfully to employment and economic development.
With expansion comes responsibility, and the Gambling Authority is enforcing strict regulatory requirements to ensure a safe and compliant betting environment. Operators are mandated to implement robust access restrictions and real-time identity verification tools to prevent underage gambling and unauthorized participation.
To strengthen regulatory oversight, the Authority is also promoting the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. These technologies are capable of detecting irregular betting patterns, identifying early signs of problem gambling, and triggering alerts related to anti-money laundering risks. This AI-driven approach enhances the Authority’s ability to monitor operator compliance and safeguard consumer well-being.
As part of the licensing framework, all operators are required to allocate a percentage of their Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR) toward Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These contributions will support programs in youth development, education, health awareness, and sports. The Gambling Authority will track these efforts through annual reporting and community feedback mechanisms to ensure transparency and effectiveness.
To better inform future regulatory strategies, the Gambling Authority is currently undertaking a nationwide study focused on gambling behavior. The study places particular emphasis on the growth of online gambling and its associated risks. Findings will help shape policy, improve consumer protections, and guide the development of targeted intervention programs.
