Palmeiras finds sponsorship loophole as Sportingbet branding gives way to Sportingblog

Palmeiras has replaced Sportingbet with affiliated sports statistics platform Sportingblog, allowing the club to maintain its sponsorship relationship amid Brazil’s restrictions on betting advertising.

Brazilian football club Palmeiras has found a way to preserve its lucrative sponsorship agreement with Sportingbet despite the country's recent restrictions on gambling advertising.

The club, which signed a major sponsorship deal with the Entain-owned betting operator in January 2025, has introduced Sportingblog as an alternative shirt sponsor.

Sportingblog is a sports information platform associated with Sportingbet, providing football statistics, match results and other sports-related content rather than direct betting services.

The change allows Palmeiras to continue displaying a brand connected to its existing commercial partner without featuring the betting operator's name on its shirts.

It is an interesting development in Brazil, where the government's decision to prohibit online betting has created considerable uncertainty for football clubs that depend on gambling sponsorship revenue.

However, the arrangement also raises an important question: does replacing a betting brand with an affiliated sports information platform comply with the advertising restrictions, or does it amount to indirect gambling promotion?

A major sponsorship agreement with Sportingbet

Palmeiras originally announced Sportingbet as its principal shirt sponsor in January 2025.

The agreement runs until December 2027 and covers both the men's and women's first teams.

Under the original partnership, Sportingbet secured branding across match shirts, training equipment and travel clothing, including shirts, backpacks and caps.

The operator also obtained naming rights for TV Palmeiras and Palmeiras Cast, giving it additional exposure through the club's own media channels.

The agreement represented a significant commercial investment by Entain, which had recently secured authorisation to operate Sportingbet in Brazil's regulated gambling market.

At the time, Entain described the partnership as an important milestone in its Brazilian expansion strategy.

Palmeiras President Leila Pereira also welcomed the agreement, highlighting the club's ambitions to develop its commercial activities alongside one of the country's established betting operators.

According to Brazilian media reports, the sponsorship guarantees Palmeiras approximately BRL100 million per year, with performance-related bonuses potentially increasing its annual value to around BRL170 million.

These figures make the Sportingbet agreement one of the club's most important commercial partnerships.

Losing that revenue would therefore represent a significant financial setback.

Sportingblog replaces Sportingbet on the shirt

Following Brazil's introduction of restrictions on online betting operations and advertising in September 2026, Palmeiras removed Sportingbet's branding from its shirts.

For several matches, the principal sponsorship position remained empty.

The club subsequently introduced Sportingblog, a sports information platform connected to the same betting group.

The new branding appeared during Palmeiras' Copa Libertadores semi-final against Fluminense on 21 October 2026.

Although the name is different, the connection to Sportingbet is central to the arrangement.

Sportingblog offers sports statistics, live scores and football information rather than functioning as an online betting operator.

That distinction allows Palmeiras and its commercial partner to present the sponsorship as the promotion of a sports information service rather than a gambling product.

The arrangement also means that the operator's wider business remains associated with Palmeiras, even though the Sportingbet name is no longer displayed.

Brazilian reports indicated that the existing financial terms of the sponsorship were maintained at the time of the substitution.

The Sportingblog appearance was initially presented as a specific match activation, with no definitive confirmation that the brand would permanently replace Sportingbet.

Nevertheless, the decision demonstrates how Palmeiras is attempting to protect the commercial value of its existing agreement.

How the sponsorship loophole works

The strategy relies on a distinction between advertising a gambling operator and advertising a separate sports-related service connected to that operator.

Brazil's restrictions target the operation and promotion of online betting activities, including gambling advertising and sponsorship.

However, a sports information platform does not necessarily provide gambling services.

A website offering match statistics, live scores and football news can operate independently of betting transactions.

By promoting Sportingblog instead of Sportingbet, Palmeiras is effectively shifting its sponsorship exposure from a gambling brand to a sports content brand.

From a commercial perspective, the benefits are clear.

Palmeiras can maintain its relationship with an existing sponsor rather than immediately searching for a replacement.

Sportingbet's wider corporate group can also retain a connection with the club's supporters through a related brand.

The approach potentially protects a substantial sponsorship investment while avoiding the direct display of a betting operator's name.

However, the legal distinction is not automatically sufficient to establish compliance.

Authorities could consider whether Sportingblog operates as a genuinely separate sports information platform or whether its sponsorship indirectly promotes Sportingbet.

The relationship between the two brands, their marketing activities and any links directing users towards gambling services could all become relevant.

For that reason, the arrangement should be viewed as a potential loophole rather than a confirmed legal exemption.

Why Palmeiras cannot afford to lose the deal

The financial stakes help explain why Palmeiras has been willing to explore alternative sponsorship arrangements.

Its Sportingbet agreement was negotiated at a time when Brazil was establishing a regulated online betting market.

Licensed gambling companies were investing heavily in football sponsorships to increase awareness and compete for customers.

For clubs, this created a valuable new source of commercial revenue.

Palmeiras secured a particularly lucrative agreement, with substantial guaranteed payments and additional performance incentives.

The contract also extends beyond shirt branding, incorporating media rights and other commercial assets.

A sudden prohibition on gambling sponsorship therefore threatens more than the visibility of a single logo.

It creates uncertainty around a multi-year commercial agreement that the club had already incorporated into its financial planning.

Replacing Sportingbet with another sponsor at a comparable valuation would not necessarily be straightforward.

A new commercial partner would have to match the financial commitment of an operator that had entered Brazil's betting market with significant growth ambitions.

By introducing Sportingblog, Palmeiras has found a way to preserve the relationship while adapting the visible branding.

The approach is commercially understandable, although its long-term viability remains uncertain.

A familiar approach from European football

The idea of using sports information brands connected to gambling companies is not entirely new.

Similar arrangements have appeared in European football, particularly in Italy following the introduction of restrictions on gambling advertising.

The Italian market has seen sponsorship agreements involving sports content brands such as Betsson.sport, Eurobet.live and AdmiralBet.news.

These brands focus on sports information, news and entertainment rather than directly presenting themselves as betting platforms.

The approach enables gambling groups to maintain a commercial association with football clubs while promoting a different part of their business.

Sportingblog follows a comparable principle.

Rather than abandoning football sponsorship entirely, the company associated with Sportingbet is using a sports information platform to maintain visibility.

However, Brazilian legislation must be assessed independently of European precedents.

The fact that similar arrangements exist elsewhere does not mean Palmeiras' approach is automatically permitted under Brazil's rules.

Legal uncertainty remains

The future of Palmeiras' sponsorship arrangement will depend partly on the outcome of Brazil's wider regulatory debate.

The government's September 2026 betting restrictions have faced opposition from gambling operators and football organisations, with legal challenges questioning the measures and their implementation.

The provisional nature of the restrictions has also created uncertainty over how long the current framework will remain in place.

For Palmeiras, that uncertainty complicates decisions about its principal sponsorship position.

The club has an agreement with Sportingbet running until December 2027, but the operator's ability to receive direct advertising exposure has been affected by the government's measures.

Sportingblog provides an alternative, although it remains unclear whether the arrangement will be accepted as compliant over the longer term.

A regulatory finding that affiliated sports information platforms amount to indirect gambling advertising could undermine the strategy.

Conversely, if such sponsorships are considered permissible, the model could provide betting groups with an alternative way to maintain commercial relationships with football clubs.

For now, Palmeiras has demonstrated how an existing sponsorship can be adapted without immediately ending the underlying commercial relationship.

Palmeiras tests the boundaries of betting sponsorship

The Sportingblog arrangement is notable because it illustrates the difficulty of separating gambling companies from the wider sports businesses associated with them.

Sportingbet is a betting operator, while Sportingblog presents itself as a sports information platform.

Yet both remain connected through the same commercial relationship with Palmeiras.

The distinction matters because Brazil's restrictions are intended to limit gambling activity and promotion, not necessarily prohibit every sports-related service associated with a gambling group.

Palmeiras is attempting to operate within that distinction while protecting a sponsorship agreement worth a reported BRL100 million annually.

Whether the approach proves sustainable will depend on how Brazilian regulators and courts interpret indirect advertising.

For the moment, Sportingbet may have disappeared from Palmeiras' shirt, but its commercial relationship with the club has not.

That is what makes Sportingblog's appearance particularly significant: it shows how football clubs and gambling groups can attempt to preserve sponsorship value even when direct betting advertising is restricted.
